Details | Phyles lived with Nell for many years at Shoreham and then at Ryde. When Nell died she lived with Nell's son Vic (and me) for a time until she too died. She stayed in bed most of the time in those days, giving me sixpences if ever I summoned up the nerve to enter her bedroom. She seemed to be fat kindly old lady, with long grey hair wrapped around her head, rumbustuous like Nell, but perhaps not quite so extreme. She seemed to be more in charge of Woof the cat, whereas Nell (Granny Simons) looked after Wiggy the dog. Woof came to our house too, and ripped up the curtains. I learn from my mother that she was a Music-Hall dresser in younger years, dressing the likes of Fred Carno and Charlie Chaplin, before they went to America. We have a picture of Phyllis and her husband, and her surname was apparently Fricker. So that is why I put her here - the Fricker I knew best, but one I know little about. I presume there were no children, as I do not recall anyone else coming to the funeral. |
