SANGORSKI COUSINS MEET on 7TH. MAY 1988

Towards the end of 1987 there had been frequent references in the papers and on TV to the possible recovery of items from the wreck of the Titanic which had been located earlier. This raised hopes that Francis Sangorski’s famous treasure, "The Great Omar", might be seen again.

This speculation stimulated much discussion amongst our cousins, and it was at this time I discovered several items to add to the Family Tree which I had been compiling over many years. Soon more communication between cousins brought welcome additions to the family story. Alas, The Great Omar was not found, but much interest had been created, and when I sent out a new edition of the Family Tree early in 1988 the suggestion was soon made that there should be a meeting of cousins.

This idea was immediately and enthusiastically received by all, and Richard kindly offered us his lovely cottage at Beckenham for the get-together on May 7th. In the weeks before, we had quick response from everyone and soon found that there was likely to be about two dozen visitors. I compiled a "list" showing relationships so that everyone would soon get to know who-was-who on our big day.

The Sangorski cousins' party was a great success in every way; There were 26 of us present, many had not met before; everybody got along splendidly. Now, four months later our host, Richard, has asked me to write these few notes to record who came along, and to remind us all of these relationships in a few years' time.

The first Sangorski arrived in London from his native Crakow in 1860, and a year later our Polish ancestor married an English girl, Lydia Clark, at St.Annes Church, Soho. Felix and Lydia had four sons and two daughters and it is some of their descendants who foregathered at Burrell Cottage. The most celebrated son, Francis Sangorski, was the youngest and he himself had 3 sons and a daughter, Betty. We were delighted to see her with her daughters Patty and husband Colin and their Joanna, and Rosemary and her husband Robert. I do not think Betty will mind me noting that she was proudly announcing that "She was the oldest here".

Thomas Sangorski was the second son. He had a daughter, Ellen Lydia, and a son Henry James, who became a dentist. Ellen's son, Victor, a retired dentist, came to the party with his wife Marjorie, and daughters Louise with husband Neil, and Joanna with her husband Douglas.

Henry James changed his Sangorski name to Fricker and had 3 sons by his first marriage, Harry, Frank and Sidney. Frank brought his wife - Vicky to the party. By a second marriage H.J.F. had a son and a daughter, Richard and Elizabeth. Richard, our host, is also a dentist, having in the first place qualified as a doctor, and Elizabeth was accompanied by her husband Peter, a dentist. Richard met his half-brother Frank for the first time in late 1987; Elizabeth met Frank for the very first time at the party. Richard's friend Cecily, was a most busy lady all afternoon; we seldom saw her out of the kitchen.

The third son, my father, was christened Felix Sangorski, but changed his name to Philip Felix in 1924. He had two sons, first myself and then my brother Len. Len brought his daughter Linda and his son John with his Anne. My wife, Madge, together with our son Rick and his wife Frances bring the party's total to 26. (these names are underlined in red).

Old Felix and Lydia's other children have no surviving descendants. Alberto, the firstborn was a most talented artist, illuminator and miniaturist. His daughter Marie used to visit us from time to time, and we learned much about her father and his beautiful work in the years before she died in 1975. Old Felix had two daughters, Josephine and Margaret . I knew these two lovely old Aunties who lived near us in Fulham in the 1920's and 30's. Josephine had one son Vernon, a dentist, who died in 1976.

Margaret we all knew as Aunt Mag, and it is she who told me the many family stories which prompted me to begin the family-tree research years and years ago. You will find all who have been mentioned in these notes on your Family Tree and since I began writing this I have heard of the arrival of a little lady whose name we add on the bottom line to old Felix's numerous great-great-great grand- children. She is Rachel Sarah Bates, born on September 5th. 1988, the daughter of Joanna and grand-daughter of Victor. Our good wishes and congratulations to Joanna and Douglas.
